The day the waters came review

The Day The Waters Came was a really good production made by the UK theatre centre. It was about a girl called Maya, her brother and her mother and how they  survived the day the waters came. this was there story. the day the waters came is about the tragic event of hurricane Katrina and how it devastated new Orleans also of how a poor district got through this . This is a story of one individual especially Maya.
The day the waters came is a unique  play because of many things. One was the set, it was extremely simple but very effective, all they had was: a sunken car, a sunken house, a ladder and a little chair. But they made it useful and work. But one of the things I didn’t like was the characters because too many, so you couldn’t make it out sometimes when the changed characters. But I also think that that was because of a non- linear (not straight forward)  storyline.
The props were also simple but effective. For example, the teddy bear was a good use because it represented a child was on the stage and vulnerability. The costume was very good because of the simplicity of it. But how they wore it reflected the character very well e.g. wearing it baggy represented that he was a gangster. Also they didn’t change their clothes, they just changed of how they wore their clothes.
The music and SFX was  astonishing, from the happy dancing music to the hopeful singing. But what I think which was the best was the water effects because that represented cross cutting so it was quite clear of which scene was which. The overall thought of  the music and SFX is that each song and effect reflected the emotions going on in the play.
The characterisation (voice and movement)  was fantastic because it really represented the people of new Orleans and what they would have done. The gestures really emphasised the characters. For example,  Adrian played a gangster and the gestures emphasized this. All the other actors did this as well. The plot and style was very effective because it made us sympathise with the main character, it this case Maya and her experience of hurricane Katrina, this gave the play extra effect.
My overall thoughts on the day the waters came is that the theme was good because it was based on a real  event so that  gave the play also extra effect and meaning. Also the  issues were serious. For some examples. Death and trying to survive are meaningful and serious. The acting was excellent because of their accent and acting. But one thing the play could improve on was the amount of characters. So in conclusion I also learnt a lot for example ”how to concentrate  and stay in character when acting” , the trick is to imagine the audience  as the background in your play. This relates to my life because one of my friends were in the earthquake and tsunami catastrophe so I relate to the characters better.  All in all a thundering success.
