Ticket holders were left outraged on Saturday evening by the less than impressive firework display held at Alexandra Palace. An immense contrast to the last event in 2009 when entry was still free and always a spectacular success. This year's £10-a-head show proved to be a damp squib.

'Back with a Bang', or rather Back without a Bang, promised to be brilliant with food and drinks and easy access and of course its sparkling reputation.

In fact, dismayed, shivering patrons took to social media to vent their fury.

In reply to a tweet from @yourallypally, one angry woman claimed, "...it was awful, an oversold event that left people queueing, hungry and unable to get to see fireworks properly".

Another fumes, "You're joking right? Have u read your Facebook feedback? The event was awful! "great success" ?!?! Please advise on refund procedure?".

A final tweet tops the conversation off by simply stating, "it was a shambles".

The event included a German Bier festival, which according to many online, "ran out of beer at approximately 6pm".

Hordes of people were pushed and shoved like cattle as the stewarding was poor and chaos ensued, most people agreeing it was an utter 'fiasco'.

I spoke to a major contributor to a local forum who attended with his two young daughters, and he told me, "Organisers encouraged people to get in early - there were long queues for ticket holders & there was not much to do apart from a few hot dog stands".

"We waited in the cold for an hour before the fireworks started. My girls were getting bored and we were all freezing"...apparently, he didn't get to have any beer either.

When I asked him what he knew about the old annual shows, he said, "I understand that Haringey decided to cancel the event after 2009 - but if they hand it over to independent organisers, who charge a sizeable fee, I think there is a higher expectation".

Even the fireworks themselves came into criticism when a member of the same forum complained that "the fireworks were far too low", "poorly positioned" and "most exploded horizontally, rather than vertically, some even 'popped' below horizon level down the hill".

Overall, the most popular word used to describe the show was 'awful', despite Alexandra Palace and event organiser 'Slammin' Events' still insisting in a joint statement that it was a "great success".

The Crouch End community Twitter account posted this:

"Anyone seeking refunds for @Yourallypally fireworks night are advised to e-mail feedback@alexandrapalace.com. We've done so already!"

A thousand pennies for the Guy anyone?
