Letter to the editor: Your correspondent yearns for the return of nationalised railways (Get Rid Of Franchises To Improve Railways, News Shopper, April 17).
I wonder how old he or she is, or if there has been a memory lapse? My memory of British Rail (BR) is one of unpunctual trains, ever- increasing fares (as is also the case now), overcrowded carriages and, above all, strikes.
Indeed, as a direct result of yet another strike around 1972, I abandoned rail in favour of the motorbike, which I used for 12 years for my daily journey to central London.
It was cheap and reliable, which is more than can be said of BR.
