Today was our first game of the Championships against host team, Canada. A good crowd assembled inside the Richmond Oval as both teams completed their warm up. Shortly before the game, a ceremonial tip-off took place between GB’s captain, Steve Palmer and his Canadian counterpart, Garett Hickling. With all the formalities complete, it was finally game time!

Unfortunately GB got off to a bad start and found themselves goals down early on, finishing the first quarter down by three. The second quarter saw our newer squad members; David Anthony and Mandip Sehmi make their World Championship debuts. Both players brought great speed and energy to the court but couldn’t stop the Canadians extending their lead to five by half time.

The second half saw us peg back Canada briefly but we just couldn’t keep up the momentum. In the end we ran out of time and found ourselves stretched as we tried to pull goals back. The game ended 48-41 in Canada’s favour.

This was a tough loss and a big disappointment for us but there’s no time for regrets and we must look forward to our next game. Tomorrow will be the hardest day of the tournament for us as we face Sweden at 1200 and the U.S. at 1900. (Bear in mind that Vancouver is eight hours behind British time).
