Ellen Gandy reached the final of the 100m butterfly in the Aquatics Centre this evening despite a fifth place finish in her semi final.

The Bromley-born competitor will be the sole British representative in tomorrow night’s final after fellow Brit Fran Halsall could only manage seventh in the first semi.

Gandy swam 58.25 to finish second in her earlier heat but went over half a second quicker this evening to reach the final.

She touched home fifth in the second semi but her time of 57.66 was quick enough to ensure there will be British representation in the top eight.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist will be up against some stiff competition tomorrow, with fastest qualifier Dana Vollmer having swum over one second quicker in the semi final, while Australian Alicia Coutts should also prove strong opposition.
