Using words as weapons

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." It's a famous proverb, and is complete nonsense.

For example, rumours are one of the most upsetting things to do to someone.

Rumours are the ultimate and the worst kind of gossip.

They hurt people, ruin friendships and damage relationships, and are there any meanings there that aren't malicious? No.

Why would anyone deliberately go out to verbally hurt people? I don't know why, but I think that it's completely disgusting.

If I was to fall out with my best friend, then go out and make up something about them, which I knew would hurt them, what sort of a friend would that make me? How likely is that to resolve the problem? The answer is: It's not.

The fact of the matter is that though it may feel good at the time to get in a bit of 'sweet revenge', it can permanently stomp on any connection between people, severing what may have flourished into a beautiful friendship, maybe forever.

Now, rumours don't have to be big to hurt someone. Yes, they can hurt people more, but that's irrelevant. From insinuating that someone is an alcohol and drug user to simply saying someone, for example, never washes, even said as a joke, is hurtful.

Next time you have an argument with someone who is a friend, think about what you're doing before you make up a story to hurt them.

There's another good proverb: "Do unto others as you'd have them do to you."

How would you like it?
