Newham Music is looking for singers for a massive 200-voice youth choir to perform at the East London Waterways Festival on Monday, 28th August 2017 in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Young singers ages 7-18 are invited from all over London to join the Newham Music Canal Choir to work hard, have fun, and make new friends while preparing for this unique performance opportunity. This will be an excellent chance for young people to develop their singing skills while exploring the history and culture of East London. There is no cost to participate and no experience necessary. Local choirmaster, Luke Spiers will be directing the group.

The East London Waterways Festival is being held by the Canal & River Trust to celebrate the opening of the new Carpenter’s Road Lock and everything the local rivers and canals offer to the people in the area. The festival will include a boat flotilla, dragon boat racing, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, rowing, boat trips and pedalos. There will also be food stalls, family activities, heritage walks and an outdoor film screening hosted by Nomad Cinema. All choir participants are encouraged to invite family and friends to enjoy the festival with between performances.

Canal Choir director, Luke Spiers, said: “Music has such a profound influence on so many lives and can benefit us socially, emotionally and even physically. Singing is a great way of bringing people together and it gives members of the community the opportunity to develop genuine friendships through song.”

Weekly rehearsals will take place every Saturday in August at Chobham Academy, 40 Cheering Lane, Startford, E20 1BD. Choir members are expected to attend at least three rehearsals prior to the performance date.
