Residents at a Chislehurst care home have marked the run up to this year’s Dementia Awareness Week (14-20 May) by caring for new chicks.

Activities Coordinator Susan Goodrich organised the two week chick hatching programme for residents at RMBI care home Prince George Duke of Kent Court with Living Eggs, which provides egg hatching programmes in schools and care homes.

“We were given 10 eggs, along with an incubator and a brooder box complete with heat, light, bedding, food and water, to help care for the chicks once they had hatched. Both residents and staff were able to observe the eggs easily, and attend to the chicks once they finally hatched,” says Susan Goodrich.

“It was a great way to mark the lead up to Dementia Awareness Week, and our residents thoroughly enjoyed getting involved. For many it brought back memories of when their families kept chickens at home, and the activity provided a familiar environment for people to share their stories.”
