On Wednesday, 29 March, St Mary Cray welcomed fifty children’s families to a Sports Celebration held after school.

The event was to celebrate nearly £5,000 of Affinity Sutton grant funding received to purchase portable lighting, which allowed over 65 children to train later into the dark afternoons over the past winter season. The lights were purchased in November and used through February, allowing the children to further develop their fitness and sport skills.

The Celebration started with a demonstration of the football and tag rugby skills in the Arena that the children had developed over the past season and was followed by a picnic of hot dogs, crisps drinks and ice cream, which was also paid for through the funding. We were very pleased to have over 150 parents, children and special guests attend including Councillor Chris Pierce, Adila Rose, Affinity Sutton Neighbourhood investment Officers and several members of the Safer Community Team.

Adam Lowing, SMCPA Headteacher said, “We are delighted to have been able to enhance our sport offer thanks to Affinity Sutton’s support not only for the lights but for this community event. It was a fantastic occasion to have so many from the community coming together to celebrate young people doing such positive things. The children had a great time and enjoyed showing off their skills in front of such a large audience."

“ It’s great to see the community come together to celebrate the children’s fitness and developing sport skills.” commented Rev Jane Winter, School Governor.

Julie Covill, Chair of governors said, “It has only been possible purchase the portable lighting and put on this event because of this grant from Affinity Sutton. We are so grateful for their support and look forward to continuing to work with them.”
