Cub Scouts up and down the country are celebrating 100 years of adventure with Cubs 100 Promise Parties – with some heading to major landmarks for the event. Last Friday exactly 100 years from when the Cub Scout Movement was launched – Cubs joined together with thousands of others to renew their promise.

Throughout the day there were events taking place throughout London, in the North East at the Angel of the North, Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth – as well as sites in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

Cubs in Welling took part in a service held at the Methodist Church in Bellegrove Road. At the service Cubs renewed their promise and were also encouraged to bring a toy which was donated to Bexley Women's Aid. There was then a celebration party after the service. The new Mayor of Bexley, Eileen Pallen was in attendance with husband Mark as escort. They were joined by Councillors James Hunt and Nigel Betts.

At 7.16pm (19.16 – the time that commemorates the official registration date of the Cub Scout section) Cub Scout packs across Bexley joined together in renewing their Cub Scout Promise, pledging to do their best and help other people. The events have been organised by local groups and they’re being encouraged to do it in places other than their usual meeting place – the more adventurous the better.

Cub Scouts are 8 – 10 ½ year olds and they take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. A Cub Scout meeting consists of games and activities with plenty of time spent outdoors as part of an adventure packed programme.

Amy Jackaman, aged 10 from the 1st East Wickham Scout group, said "I’ve had some amazing adventures with Cub Scouts, it’s awesome! I get to go canoeing and climbing, play games with my friends and learn really useful things like First Aid and DIY. Being a Cub Scout is all about doing your best and I try to do this every day”

Adult volunteer Anne Rickson said, “I’ve had some great times volunteering as a Scout Volunteer and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s wonderful to see young people develop the skills they need to succeed in life by trying new things, whilst having fun with their friends. I volunteered to help develop young people but I stayed because it’s great fun! ”

Scouting seeks to transform the lives of young people by providing an inspiring programme of everyday adventure. Over 200 activities, including adventure camps, climbing and water zorbing, are on offer.

Cub 100 Ambassador Steve Backshall said; “What a wonderful way to end this year of centenary celebrations. Young people up and down the country are renewing their promise and taking time to think about all the amazing opportunities they’ve been given – it’s great to see so many Cubs taking part in the party. Over the past 100 years Cub Scouting has continued to grow, and I hope it will get even bigger and better for the next hundred. Scouting givens so many young people the skills they need to succeed and gives them a real sense of adventure and achievement. And I’m so proud to be involved with such a fantastic cause.”

Scouting is shaped by young people in partnership with adults and we are always looking for new volunteers and if you fancy a go why not join the adventure at www.scouts.org.uk/join.
