Young star loves helping people

Josh Luton is an active member of the community who enjoys helping people, including his autistic brother. DAVID MILLS finds out more.

NINE-YEAR-OLD Josh Luton loves helping others, be it his family or the community.

The pupil at Our Lady's Catholic Primary School, King Edward Avenue, Dartford, has been nominated by his proud mother in the best community servant category for the News Shopper's Our Young Stars awards.

In the last year, Josh has done several fundraising events for charity and the local hospital.

He played a solo recorder piece at a concert in aid of north-west Kent LIFE, a charity which supports women contemplating abortion, suffering after pregnancy loss or struggling to cope after abortion.

Josh, of Chatsworth Road, Darford, helped raise £100 for the same charity by taking part in an eight-mile sponsored walk that crossed every bridge in London, from Tower Bridge to Albert Bridge.

His mother Rebecca Luton, 41, said: "He's a great little boy, always doing things for other people.

"He loves helping people."

Josh helps out around the house, especially with looking after his eight-year-old brother Daniel, who has autism.

Mrs Luton, a housewife, said: "It's like living with a naughty child who can't help it.

"It's hard work for Josh, but he copes very well and if Daniel can't do anything, Josh shows him how to.

"He's very patient with him."

Despite being busy at home, Josh, who has a second younger brother, Michael, aged three, manages to do all his homework and finds time to do other activities.

He is a member of the Fifth Dartford Leigh Pack Cubs, and recently helped raise money to donate a computer game console to the children's ward at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford.

When he is not at cubs, he sings and plays the recorder for a children's music group at St Anselm's Church, where he is also an altar server.

Josh hopes to design computer games when he is older.
