A SUSPECTED bomb found by a pensioner is his garden has turned out to be a piece of scrap metal.

Police were called to Venture Close, Bexley at 9.30am this morning after John Marriott, 75, found a long metal object in his garden, suspected to be a world war bomb.

Officers promply evacuated the scene and set up road closures.

However, upon closer inspection, the suspected bomb was revealed to be just a large piece of scrap metal.

Police left the scene around midday.

A police spokeswoman said: "No explosive device has been found and residents are free to return to their homes."

Hang on, he was in the army for ten years, he knew a bomb when he saw one! Bet his neighbours love him.

What an absolute waste of everyone's time... maybe he should go to SpecSavers!

Hoping there was no serious crime taking place whilst the police were dealing with this non-story!

Well I think the police should confiscate his metal detector, and charge him with being drunk in charge of said detector. He should the very least be banned from owning one for the foreseeable future.

Will John Marriott be allowed to weight in the scrap metal ?

Should of hit it with a hammer first. Then if it starts ticking you know it's a bomb or a large metal clock.

Perhaps he could donate the scrap to the BNP, they're like Dan for funds. Desperate.

It's oh so easy to be wise after the fact. Hindsight is such a wondefully exact science. It was a 'long metal object'. He did the right thing. Someone thought it best to close the roads as a precaution, so what he was wrong, no one was harmed. It wasn't deliberate, it's called 'playing it safe'. You can't win with readers here, 'negative' doesn't cover the half of it.
