Man living in Blackheath hole offered new home

A MAN who has lived in a hole on Blackheath for nearly four years is finally moving on, it has been announced.

This month, News Shopper highlighted the plight of the mystery Middle Eastern man who lives on the heath, almost unnoticed, all year round.

Ward councillor Chris Maines had raised concerns that, with the arrival of the Olympics and surface-to-air missiles nearby, the man should be found somewhere more suitable.

A spokesman for Lewisham Council said: "The council along with the police, South London and Maudsley and voluntary agencies, have been in discussion with this gentleman for a long time and until recently all our offers of accommodation have been declined.

"However, on March 26 he agreed to go into temporary accommodation in the borough and we are now working with him to find the most appropriate permanent housing solution to meet his needs."
