BASEMENT side Chalfont St Peter Football Club looked on course for only their third win of the Ryman League third division campaign last Saturday only to have it snatched from them in the final seven minutes by fellow strugglers Croydon.

Fourth-from-bottom Croydon stung the Saints with two goals in two minutes to seal a 2-1 win and sink Chalfont's hopes of taking all three points.

Chalfont had looked on course to do it after an improved second half performance saw them take the lead on the hour mark.

That came after the visitors had bossed the first half at the Playing Fields but proved unable to convert their chances.

It was Chalfont, instead, who came out for the second half looking the more determined and on 60 minutes they got their reward, albeit in scrappy fashion.

Darryl King hardly had to do anything as he watched the ball dribble over the goalline after the confused Croydon defence failed to clear the danger.

And after reverting to five at the back, Chalfont looked like they would hold on to that slim lead until the end, as they ably dealt with all the visitors could throw at them for the following 20 minutes.

Chalfont keeper Danny Coleman made some particularly excellent saves to keep his side in it, parrying Johnson's point blank effort with his knees before dealing with Tony Quinton's follow-up. That came shortly after he was called into action to stop Quinton's dangerous long-range drive.

Lewis Foster could have put the Saints two up had his effort not struck the upright.

But seven minutes from the end disaster struck when Chalfont's Matt Ward and Kevin Davies, who had defended so well up until then, collided as they both went to clear the same ball.

Croydon leapt at the chance with substitute Wilkinson blasting the loose ball home.

And the visitors added insult to injury two minutes later when Marcus Dussard, who had come on just 15 minutes before, blasted into an empty net after Coleman had committed himself to a cross and fluffed it.
