Clarke bids for support

9:47am Friday 24th August 2001

Kenneth Clarke was drumming up support for his leadership bid when he visited the borough last weekend.

The MP was joined by his Sidcup-born wife Gillian on the tour of the borough.

His first port of call was the Aquila military research site, in Bickley, where environmental issues were discussed. He then moved on to the Lion's Den, at Crofton Hall, Orpington, for more relaxed discussions. More than 250 Conservative party members from Bromley and Bexley welcomed the MP as he chatted to residents and councillors.
