Glass shards in park pool

11:37am Friday 24th August 2001

A children's paddling pool was reopened to the public last week after broken glass was cleared from the water.

The pool, in Belvedere recreation ground, is one of the most popular venues in the area for parents and youngsters during the summer.

Five children, thought to be aged 12 or under, are believed to have cycled through the park and thrown shards of glass from a nearby shattered bus shelter into the pool.

They were seen by parents who reported the incident to Bexley Council.

The council immediately closed the pool, then drained and cleared it before reopening.

Two weeks ago, the pool was closed after children cut their feet on a broken beer bottle which had been thrown into the water.

The pool and the recreation ground are checked every day before opening and a second time, later in the day, for glass by the council which advises children should wear shoes.

The council thanked the parents for their prompt action.
