Video: Sikhs take to streets for festival
The Sikh Vaisakhi Festival procession BE10901
The Sikh Vaisakhi Festival procession BE10901

A SIKH festival which took to the streets of Gravesend attracted more than 5,000 people.

The annual Vaisakhi harvest festival procession toured the roads starting and finishing at the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Clarence Place.

It set off at 11.25am and finished at 2.45pm, passing landmarks such as the new Gurdwara being built in Khalsa Avenue as well as the town's clock tower and police station on April 12.

Entertainment included a demonstration of the Sikh martial art Gatka by the Baba Fateh Singh Gatka Akhara group.

More than £150,000 was raised throughout the day from donations which will go towards the building of the new £11.5m Gurdwara.

Jaspal Singh Dhesi, the president of the Gurdwara management committee, which organised the event, said: "It was a huge success and we would like to thank all the many people who came along and who helped organise the day."

A big well done for raising money but its going towards chucking up more temples etc. Its perfectly fine to have your beliefs etc but behind your on closed front door not pushed in English peoples faces we wouldnt be aloud to build churchs in pakistan would we??? What happened to saint georges day??? Oh i forgot we dont celebrate that anymore because it affends other peoples religions and its apparantly rascist?!?! One rule for one and one rule for another. What a weak pathetic nation we are turning into!!!

Local, are you really that thick or are you just trying to wind people up?

1. A lot of Sikh people are as English as you and me.

2. Pakistan is a Muslim country.

3. There ARE major St George's Day celebrations, in London and elsewhere. In fact, there is a big parade in Gravesend today.

Does your ignorance know any bounds?

I'm English and I have no problem with the Sikhs parade at all. Local doesn't speak for all English people!
