Call to hit uninsured drivers with big fines

A SECRETARY has launched a one-woman battle to hold uninsured drivers to account after being left hundreds of pounds out of pocket.

Alison Scrivener, 50, is convinced it is cheaper for uninsured drivers to take their chances as court fines, if they have an accident, are much less than the cost of insurance.

An uninsured driver crashed into the front garden of her home in North Cray Road, Bexley, in August last year.

A concrete fence was demolished and Mrs Scrivener's son's car was written off in the collision.

The Scriveners have been left at least £500 out of pocket as a result of the accident.

Mrs Scrivener was at Bexley Magistrates' Court last week to hear the driver admit to driving without a licence and without insurance.

He was fined £200 and banned from driving for six months.

Afterwards she said: "This is not justice.

"Since he did not have a licence anyway, I doubt being disqualified will mean anything to him.

"And £200 is a fraction of what the insurance would have cost him.

"So he has effectively gone without punishment at all, while we are left severely out of pocket for having parked the car in our own drive and gone to bed."

She added: "I am told it is now fairly common for young drivers to take their chances, on the grounds the fines are less than the insurance."

Mrs Scrivener said her family has received no compensation for the damage.

She would like to see the law changed to provide higher fines for uninsured drivers.

And she said if courts were able to impose fines which are at least twice the cost of the original insurance, it would deter people from driving without it.

But her appeal to Old Bexley and Sidcup MP Derek Conway to press for changes to the law fell on deaf ears.

He said although he had sympathy for the Scriveners, the separation of courts from the political process was "ultimately for the good of the country".

Mr Conway added: "I see no prospect of the Government amending the law in this matter."

The accident was just one in a series suffered by the Scriveners and their neighbours, caused by drivers failing to negotiate the roundabout at the end of the North Cray Road dual carriageway.

I had a similar thing happen to me last year, when a drunk uninsured and already on a ban moron hit my car whilst stationary and completely wrote it off. The guy also ran from the scene but was later caught by police. He went to court and got an 'extended ban' on top of the one he already had and £50 worth of court fines. I got, nothing.Jus a car in pieces that had to be later crushed. The insurance company I was with said there was nothing they could do as he was not insured. Why dont we all just not get insured, its cheaper!

The simple answer is for every vehicle to carry badges of insurance/mot placed on the front and rear number plates. Then employ more enforcement officers who arrange for vehicles spotted on the road without said badges, to be towed away and crushed without the owner having any right to appeal. Not only would this remove unroadworthy and uninsured vehicles from the road, It would reduce the cost of insurance etc for the rest of us as they wouldnt have to pay out for uninsured losses.
I'm right behind this lady on this one. I'm fed up with people that refuse to abide by the law and pay their way the same as the rest of us law abiding folk. Its us thats has to pay for them in the long run !But the answer is not " if you cant beat em join em" what happens if the day after you chose to not insure your vehicle you accidently run down a child and make them a cripple ? Could you live with yourself knowing your decision cost this child the financial support it would need ? Ok money couldn't replace the loss of the use of the use of ones legs. But it would go a long way to making sure they could afford every bit of help and equipment that they needed to help make a better life for themselfs.

This person was having a lucky day with the judge. The judge should be fired. Despicable. People driving stolen cars, driving without insurance nor MOT is so common in this country; it has been going on for years and the problems will never be addressed whilst the punishment is too lenient. Again, the 'victim' is the one picking up the pieces, the bill for the damage caused to their car whilst the culprit walks away without a care in the world. No wonder they never learn because they are continuously allowed to walk away without a proper punishment.

Why is our country so badly managed?

The last sentence you wrote Sunny says it all!

This country has gone to pot!

These sort of stories make me so angry as these people will continue to break the law because 9 times out of 10 they dont get caught and when they do its thrown out of court!

GRRRRRRRRRRR!

Hi Sad to be British

This Government infuriates me. When are they going to open up their eyes and WAKE UP? 1 million people are leaving this country every year and it certainly is not the ones living in council houses (no disrespect to those who do) but the relatively half decent person is diminishing fast and what are we left with?? Take a look at the regular news/people in the Newsshopper and you will find your answer. The Government does not live in the real world, not until one of their children are murdered, raped or stabbed are they going to wake up. Tony Blair’s son should have gone to war like all the other families children who did, but not good old Tony, oh no, my little boy is wrapped in cotton wool where I know he will be safe. This Government has got its priorities wrong and seriously needs to stop looking through stained coloured glasses and see what is really going on – even though it doesn’t effect their lives!

I had an accident three years ago with an uninsured driver who failed to stop I was luck enough to have a witness who got the number of the car.Myself and my passengers suffered very bad whiplash and at one point they thought I had fractured my neck which I still suffer with although I got some compensation from the MIB the driver was stil better of because she had no tax no insurance no mot.She went to court and got a £230 fine and three points, the fine was less than the excess of £300 which I had to pay on my insurance, so I totally agree these people shoud have the book thrown at them

Its a shame that in a civillised democratic society that we are supposed to be , this woman couldn't receive the council support nor the legal system which have both failed an innocent victim ! There should be a much stronger punishment for someone that can't be bothered to pay an annual insurance premium , keep their car road-worthy by getting an MOT which means the car has to be serviced and the brakes tested ! Does a person have to be killed before any authority is forced to make a decision which I think is the case , sadly for all of us !

Alison perhaps you should ask Mr Conway to claim back your £500 from his MP expenses. I am sure he could if he wanted to. He seems to be able to claim for everything else. He's obviously not interested in your unfair treatment. In my opinion MPs and the like are only interested in whats in it for them. This country is becoming a laughing stock encouraging lawbreakers. We are paying £2,000 for my son to be insured in his car for a year and that's only third party cover. Law-abiding citizens in this country are the losers every time. Makes no sense at all.

Since we opened our doors to our continental brothers and sisters can any one tell me when reading their foreign registration plates, how do we know if their cars are road worthy, up to date with mot, insurance and tax. How do we stand if involved in an accident with them. Do they have to take an english driving test before allowed on our roads. Can they avoid paying fines if they decide to go back home before the fines due date and are they tracable to the police ?????
