A CANDIDATE for London Mayor wants to introduce free charging points for electric cars on every street.

Chris Prior, a candidate from the Stop Congestion Charging Party, made the promise as part of his campaign for the forthcoming mayoral elections on May 1.

Mr Prior, 43, from Clapham, is the founder of Plug in Britain, which promotes electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

He has already promised to abolish the Congestion Charge if he becomes mayor.

Mr Prior said: "It is vital we put the infrastructure in place now to support the use of low and zero emission vehicles in the future.

"I will embark on a programme to provide every street and car park with sufficient charging points to allow the widespread adoption of electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

"If we can put street lights and parking meters on streets, we can put charging points."
