Fares are ‘outrageous’

A RAIL fare hike which has seen the price of some annual tickets soar by £140 has been criticised as "outrageous".

And while passengers travelling from Maze Hill into central London are having to dig deep, those down the road in Greenwich are only paying an extra £20.

Train operator Southeastern has introduced a zoned fare structure so Oyster cards can be used in the future.

This means fares vary according to which zone commuters are travelling from.

Maze Hill is in Zone 3, meaning the cost of a season ticket from the station has leapt from £572 last year to £712.

But in Greenwich, which is the next stop along and in Zone 2, it has only risen from £520 to £540.

Malcolm Reid, a finance director from Maze Hill, travels to Charing Cross every day.

Mr Reid, 34, of Woodlands Park Road, said: "The train fares always go up a bit each year but this year was outrageous.

"There are many people round here who depend on the train."

Mr Reid says he will not benefit from the introduction of the Oyster system as he only uses trains.

He added: "A lot of people in south east London don't need to use the buses or Underground."

Transport watchdog London TravelWatch says Maze Hill was the second worst hit by the fare rises and questioned whether it should be in Zone 3.

Communications officer Jo Debank said: "We think the zone needs to be looked at again."

Southeastern's regulated fares, which includes season tickets, increased by an average of 6.8 per cent.

A company spokesman stressed the percentage increase on regulated fares is controlled by the Government and said the quality of service has improved.

He added Southeastern was required by the Department for Transport to introduce the new fare structure.

The spokesman said: "Some fares have gone up and others have gone down, but we appreciate for the losers this decision will not be popular.

"Zonal fares are simpler for passengers to understand and for those whose journeys may start and end at different stations, may offer financial savings."

However, Councillor Andy Jennings, the Conservative London Assembly candidate for Greenwich and Lewisham said: "I shall be urging Transport for London to think again about their zonal boundaries and press for a review to make our fares fairer."

Train fares are just a plian rip off. How come these rises be justifiled it's going to come to a point where people will be better off on state benefits than working for a living. Southeasstern are a joke of a train comapny the reduce services and add time onto services so that can meet their targets. Years ago a fast train would take 30 mins to London Bridge from Gravesend now it takes 50 Mins if your lucky, with new technology you would think the reserve world happen what a joke, thats privatisation for you.

your right but then again why should he have to walk? maze hill is obv his local station and he shouldn't have to be pushed to another one because of fares. Bill, would you walk up to bexleyheath station if the fares at welling rapidly increased? he is just proving a point to show the new high price of fares. the prices for trains these days are a joke and TFL are just taking advantage of those who depend on these trains. im one of these people and im paying an extra £14 a week since the increase. it might not sound much but it adds up!

Fare increase is a joke. I work night shifts, and they have changed the early trains from Charing Cross. No direct trains to Belvedere after 7am, they have all been re-routed to leave from Cannon Street. Did they mention this, no! After working nights this is the last thing i need. What with the fare increase, Sod buying a new season ticket, Going back to the car. Can get home quickly with no delays or cancellations, Personal space, Own choice of music, clean seats and no young hoodies that you want to slap. Mmmm what transport shall i use, car or train, here comes the car !!!!

The person in the article may be a Financial Director and may be able to afford the increase, but this is not the point. Maze Hill station is in East Greenwich which is far less affluent then it's West Greenwich neighbour, as such there are many people that live in the local area that will be hit hard by this increase. Another point of interest is that North Greenwich Underground station is considered Zone 2, even though it is much further down towards Charlton then Maze Hill is. If North Greenwich is Zone 2, West and Central Greenwich is Zone 2, where is the logic in East Greenwich being Zone 3?

I blame the Labour Mayor of London who wants everyone to use Oyster. How much of the fare rise is to benefit him/tfl and how much to Southeastern?
Alternative is to get a bike and cycle into the West End to lose some weight!!

I walk to work everyday and am about a third of his size and my bank balance is a lot heathier as well!

Residents of Maze Hill should maybe make use of the beauty of Greenwich park on a cold crisp winters morning and enjoy a short stroll through to Greenwich Overground station (within zone 2) enjoying both the exercise and cheaper railpasses. Perhaps local Conservative councillors should be urging TFL to be installing safe cycle boxes at Greenwich station to assist with the additional demand it shall be facing. Time for the Bicycle Malcolm!?!

I'd cycle to work but I don't rate my chances of not being shot as I go through Deptford or Bermondsey

Telling people to walk to Greenwich is NOT the solution! Maze hill station is at the bottom of my road! why should i have to increase my commute by 40 minutes everyday (in the morning and evening). because southeastern see fit to price me out of my local station? Chances are that after walking to Greenwich i won't be able to get on the train anyway because it will have filed up at maze hill like it usually does. Oh and the fast that he is a Director has nothing to do with it. We all pay the same fare no matter what our job is.
