Woolwich Crossrail station confirmed

FUNDING for the south east spur of the £16bn Crossrail development - which includes Woolwich - has been secured, the Government has said.

The news follows reports that construction of the spur, which will include the Woolwich station and runs to Abbey Wood, could be postponed due to a row over funding.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced a deal on October 5 where Crossrail will be funded equally by the Government, the private sector and borrowing against future fare revenue.

A spokeswoman from the Department for Transport said that funding was secured for the whole project and the spur would be completed at the same time as the rest.

The Crossrail route will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west across the capital into Essex and Kent in the east.

It will travel underground through the city centre between Paddington and east London.

Woolwich was initially dropped from the network, but a U-turn in March, following a News Shopper campaign, gave the go-ahead for the station to be included.

The first services are due to begin running in 2018.

We welcome the news of Crossrail comming to Woolwich and Abbey Wood along with the DLR at Woolwich Arsenal, The Greenwich Waterfront Transit and better and more frquent bus services and new bus routes. The area's regeneration can only go from strength to strength.

CT sounds like a council PR officer - I wish I could be so positive.

First of all the Greenwich Waterfront Transit is nothing more than a new set of buses that will be greener. They are not faster(ask TFL for the running times from Woolwich to North Greenwich - or look up other transit systems installed in Yorkshire as quoted in Private Eye magazine), nor more direct, and will be an utter waste of money. Scratch beneath the surface and don't buy all that TFL and the council tell you! Crossrail and DLR - they will be good - but how do people from the areas that are not served with good transport get to Woolwich or Abbey Wood to access these services?

The transport in the area is severely lacking - and the regeneration is a disaster as it isn't managed nor planned properly. The developers dictate and they don't care about the area and people who can afford to live somewhere better would not choose this area to live in.

I am looking forward to Crossrail - it promises to make my journey to work a lot easier. I think it is a shame that it has taken so long and is no longer going beyond Abbey Wood.
