Icy threat as working week begins

FORECASTERS have warned of icy conditions as many people go back to work after the weekend’s snow.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather alert, warning ice could be a hazard on roads and pavements across much of the region.

This is expected to cause travel disruptions as the temperature struggles to reach 3C during the day.

Andy Page, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: "There are a number of reasons why ice is likely to be a hazard including snow melting and then refreezing on untreated surfaces.

"There is also a risk of showers in parts of southeast England, including the London area.

“Although most showers will fall as rain, which will freeze onto sub-zero surfaces in central and eastern parts of England, there is a lower probability that some of the showers may fall as snow in a zone extending from southwest Lincolnshire to East Sussex."

But it is unlikely the News Shopper region will see any snow in the next few days with Billy Payne, forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, saying the worst of the weather was over.
