SPECTACULAR fireworks are being promised for residents willing to wait until the end of November.

Last year's Guy Fawkes Night display in Crystal Palace Park attracted 10,000 people but this year's event has been postponed until November 30.

The London Development Agency (LDA) made the decision to change the date of the fireworks after being approached by the Crystal Palace Foundation (CPF).

It requested the date be changed so it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Crystal Palace burning down.

CPF events organiser Karen Moran said: "I wanted to do a firework display to commemorate the fire and I managed to get the date moved for this year.

"It is going to be a massive fireworks display.

"It is going to be one of the biggest in the country."

She added: "I have not heard any criticism about the date change but if this was the case we would explain to them you cannot really have two firework displays because it would be ridiculous.

"It is for the 70th anniversary and is for this year only.

"From next year it will be back to normal."

But Peter Kerse, of Somerville Road, Penge, does not think the historical Guy Fawkes celebrations should be sacrificed for the anniversary.

The 50-year-old says modern firework events all stem from the Crystal Palace display in 1854 and changing the date would ruin history.

Mr Kerse said: "We have got just as much right to use it historically so why should we lose Guy Fawkes?

"I have been going since I was a small boy and it would be a marvellous opportunity for them to promote their event.

"But the LDA and the foundation have decided to change the whole course of firework history."

Father-of-two Mr Kerse added: "I welcome the event for the anniversary but why can we not have both?"
