1962 - The Beatles made their first public appearance at a record signing in Widnes.

1998 - A poll revealed that one in five people believed William Pitt was in the shadow cabinet, while two thirds of voters could not recognise anyone on the Tory front benches.
1999 - Pele's son was sentenced to six years in prison for his part in the manslaughter of a cyclist in 1992.
1999 - Mark Morrison and Dane Bowers were involved in a fight at the MOBO Awards party. The scuffle broke out when Mr Bowers saw Mr Morrison with a woman who was close friends with fellow band member Bobak Kianoush.
