1880 - The earliest ball point pen with its own ink supply and retractable tip, was patented by Alonzo T Cross.

1965 - Dick McInnes remained in flight for almost 12 hours - strapped to a kite.

1967 - The first majority verdict by a British jury was taken in Brighton.

2000 - A slimmed-down Sophie Dahl was unveiled as the new body of Opium perfume.

2001 - Robert Stevens - a picture editor at The Sun magazine in America - died after contracting pulmonary anthrax.

2002 - Italian porn star turned MP, La Cicciolina, offered herself to Saddam Hussein in exchange for world peace. She said: "I would do it holding my nose and closing my eyes. I would do it for peace."
