RADIO hams will use a historic windmill in Meopham to broadcast short-wave messages this weekend.

Short-wave enthusiasts will set-up operations in windmills and watermills across the country as part of the annual National Mills Weekend - organised by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

Among the groups of radio operators taking part at Meopham Windmill in Wrotham Road is the Cray Valley Radio Society.

On Sunday they will exchange messages with other mills and with groups of radio hams around the world.

The event is aimed at raising the profile of the mill which was built in 1801 by the Killick brothers, a highly respected Kentish milling family - along with other mills around the country.

Meopham Windmill will be open to the public from 11am to 5pm on May 11.
