NEWS Shopper got a sneak preview of the new Sidcup leisure centre, which opens to the public for the first time tomorrow.

The opening of the new centre in Hurst Road, complete with gym, sports hall, dance studio and two swimming pools, means each area of Bexley now has its own council owned indoor sporting facilities.

Instead of a swimming in a converted cinema at Lamorbey swimming centre, just around the corner in Station Road, swimmers in the south of the borough will enjoy a light and airy six-lane 25m pool, with a viewing gallery as well as a teaching pool.

The sports hall has four courts marked out for football, badminton, basketball and cricket.

Neighbouring Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, a specialist sports college, will have first call on the hall from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

The centre is talking to clubs about the possibility of an indoor cricket league and Charlton Challenge junior football, junior gym club and trampolining will also feature in the programme.

More than 30 different classes are already lined up for the huge dance studio with everything from baby ballet and baby yoga, to keep fit in retirement, and everything in between.

There are 90 stations in the fitness studio which will be open both to members and casual users.

The centre also has a fully supervised creche with an outdoor play area, exclusively for centre users, a cafe and licensed bar.

But there will be a charge for the car park during the day, to prevent it from filling up with cars owned by commuters and shoppers.

The pool opens on weekdays at 6.30am and closes at 10pm, with plenty of time for public swimming.

Centre manager Richard Tomlin said: "We have learned the lessons of the teething problems at the other two new centres in Erith and Crook Log."
