LESS than half of Londoners plan to make a pancake from scratch this Pancake Day, a new survey suggests.

The Morrisons survey revealed this is because nearly one million residents have never made them and a similar number do not know what ingredients to use.

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the day before Lent on Ash Wednesday and is traditionally a feasting day.

Sandra Clegg, home economist for Morrisons, said: "Pancakes are one of the easiest dishes to make. They can be healthy, nutritious, and with an endless variety of fillings are the perfect basis for a breakfast, lunch or dinner.

"Pancakes have been part of our culinary and social history for half a millennia. It would be a shame if making them was consigned to the history books."

The survey found that less than half of Londoners were planning to make a pancake from scratch. This comprised of more women than men, highlighting they had cooked them before and knew how to make them.

Regional differences showed that Londoners were one of the least likely regions to eat pancakes, apart from Scotland at only 34 per cent.

Even though pancake-making at home has declined, Londoners still had a great affection for eating them, with 75 per cent of people saying that they liked them.

The most favoured toppings by respondents cited was still the more traditional sugar and lemon (46 per cent) - with syrup (10 per cent) and ice-cream (10 per cent) coming a long way behind.
