A WEEK of celebrations for the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi raised £250,000 for a new Gurdwara.
So far £6m has been spent on the new Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Khalsa Avenue, Gravesend.
The cost of the project is estimated to stand at £11m, £2m more than predicted in 2006.
A fund-raising appeal was launched last week to coincide with Vaisakhi.
Collections were made at celebrations held over the weekend, including a procession which attracted around 5,000 people.
Prayers were also said from a stage built outside the new Gurdwara.
The project has reportedly be funded completely by voluntary contributions.
Gurdwara president Jaspal Singh Dhesi said: "Around £6m has so far been spent on the building.
"The aim is to open the new Gurdwara by 2009, and the Sangat is asked to give generously to complete the project."
