AN ILLEGAL immigrant who played a part in the death of a teenage lap dancer has been jailed after six years on the run.

Calvin Berry, 36, was deported to Jamaica shortly before he was linked to the death of Adelle Hamilton in her flat in Wood Vale, Forest Hill in 2001.

The 18-year-old Spearmint Rhino dancer had been bound and gagged with parcel tape.

A post mortem examination at the time did not fully establish her cause of death but the pathologist indicated it was consistent with asphyxiation.

Berry fled from Jamaica to the United States where he lived under a false name until he was caught and extradited.

He is the final member of a Jamaican gang to be convicted for suffocating Ms Hamilton.

Berry was jailed for 10 years for manslaughter and conspiracy to rob at the Old Bailey on Friday.

Background

Crystal Whilby, 20, who lived in the same tower block as Adelle was said to be jealous of her looks, figure and wealth.

Whilby and her boyfriend, Berry, hired two Jamaican friends to ambush Adelle as she returned home on July 12 2001 because they believed she had money stashed in her home.

Orlando Francis, 25, and Christopher Howell, 30, bound and gagged Adelle, leading to her death by suffocation.

The two Jamaicans, who were later jailed for eight years, admitted manslaughter and conspiracy to rob.

At Whilby's trial in 2002, Francis and Howell testified against her and she was convicted of conspiracy to rob, but acquitted of manslaughter.

She was jailed for six years.

Berry, who had acted as a lookout during the raid and received part of the £18,000 cash found in Adelle's flat went on trial at the Old Bailey earlier this month.

Adelle had worked at Spearmint Rhino, in Slough, for six months at the time of her death.

She was last seen getting into a cab, called by the club, at 1.40am on July 12.

Her decomposed body was found by her father Michael Hamilton, when he forced his way into her seventh floor flat on July 26, after becoming concerned at not hearing from her for a while.
