Charlton church raising repair cash ahead of royal visit

A CHARLTON church is desperately in need of cash for repairs as it prepares for a royal visit.

St Luke’s in Charlton Village is looking to raise more than £350 to spend on repairing its roof and tower.

The church, whose current building was constructed in 1630, is the burial place of Spencer Perceval, a former prime minister.

This May will mark the 200th anniversary of his assassination in the House of Commons and the church is planning a special event, including an expected appearance from the Duke of Gloucester.

To raise money for repairs, it will hold coffee mornings and second hand goods sales on the first Saturday of each month from April onwards.

The church is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to midday.
