A WARTIME fire engine has arrived in Dartford after being rescued by the council.
Dartford Borough Council took delivery of the 1939 engine, known as Borough of Dartford, last week at the fire station in Watling Street.
The machine was saved from an uncertain future by the council last year and will be available to hire for events such as weddings and fetes.
It will be used at the British Heart Foundation’s Red for Heart event on February 17.
A handover ceremony was attended by councilors, including council leader Jeremy Kite and chairman of Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority, Bryan Cope.
Councillor Kite, said: “When we saw it, we knew we had to have it. The fire engine is fantastic and it was great that we could buy it and give it a good home back here in Dartford.”
The engine was purchased by public subscription in 1939 and taken out of service in 1955. It was fully restored in 1971 and was kept in Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s museum.
