Orpington MP Jo Johnson appointed to Government in parliamentary private secretary role

Orpington MP Jo Johnson Orpington MP Jo Johnson

AFTER just 18 months as an MP Jo Johnson has been given a parliamentary private secretary post.

Mr Johnson was elected as MP for Orpington in the May 2010 general election and last night (January 3) appointed in his new role.

As well as representing his constituents he is now also the parliamentary private secretary to the minister of state for business and enterprise Mark Prisk MP.

Orpington Conservative Association chairman Brian Cooke said: “We are delighted that our very hard working and well respected MP has been appointed to the Government only just over 18 months after being first elected to the House of Commons.

“Having worked closely with Jo I know that he will bring great skill and tact to this role and we in Orpington are delighted for Jo in this promotion."

So instead of doing the job of representing his constituents Jo Johnson’s time will now be diluted to allow him to become Mark Prisk’s gopher.

When Brian says “we in Orpington are delighted” I assume he means just the few in the local Conservative Association and not the 68 thousand constituents who are now left with an MP who’s focus will be elsewhere.

If Jo has spare time on his hands why not use it to help Orpington?

I would think if anything it means a lack of talent amongst more experienced MPS, or a tendency to put one's foot in it, ie Aiden Burley.

Worth noting that the "impartial" boundary commission, who gave us four more years of John Horam by moving Cray West into Bromley & Chislehurst a few years ago, are now recommending that it be moved back into Orpington. No, it would not have stopped little bro from winning last year, but hopefully it will help to send him back to work in 2015.

Calendar fail.

The boundary changes you refer to came into effect at the 2010 election - when Jo Johnson first stood. John Horam was returned on the old boundaries, after which the Lib Dem candidate did a runner to Lewisham, where his political career has gone from strength to ... errm....
