POLICE and ambulances were called out today to a stabbing at a leisure centre after an apparent argument over a weights bench.

The London Ambulance Service were called out at 3.05pm to The Bridge leisure centre in Kangley Bridge Road, Lower Sydenham.

Gym member Chris Bowes, 19, said he saw two men arguing over weights bench before a fight broke out between the two.

He said: “One of the staff members broke it up and one of the fellas left.

“Ten to 15 minutes later he came back.

“Me and my mate saw him standing there and he came round the corner with a knife in his hand.”

Mr Bowes said a member of staff was stabbed and then the person who he had been fighting.

He said: “The gym wasn’t very packed but me and my mate were obviously very shocked.”

The two friends then helped to apply pressure to one of the men’s wounds before ambulances arrived.

A single responder in a car, two ambulance crews and the air ambulance were sent to the scene.

Staff treated two men who were then taken to hospital.

A leisure centre member of staff confirmed the building was currently closed.

A spokesman for Fusion Lifestlye, which runs the centre, said: "An incident occurred at The Bridge Leisure Centre early today which due to a police investigation has forced us to close the centre temporarily.

"We are co-operating in full with the investigation and are unable to make any further comment.

"Please check our website lewisham.gov.uk/leisure for updates on the re-opening of the centre."
