THE Mayor of London has announced Bexley is to receive more than £5.5m in funding for transport improvements across the borough.

The funding, allocated by Transport for London through the mayor’s transport strategy, will be spent on projects including safer roads, smoother traffic flow and rejuvenating town centres.

Welling is one area set to benefit from the cash, with £600,000 being allocated for improvements to the Welling Corridor.

A revised junction design will be implemented at Welling Corner whilst enhanced pedestrian facilities will be developed in the town centre.

Regeneration works in Crayford will account for £190,000 of the money.

The junction at Bourne Road and London Road will be improved and areas surrounding shops, schools and local attractions will be enhanced.

Smoother traffic flow will also be a target in the Crayford area and footways will be made more accessible.

A further £50,000 is being allocated to develop the High Street and Main Road areas in Sidcup town centre.

Boris Johnson, said: “London is undergoing a neo-Victorian level of investment in its transport network.

“Every London borough is receiving money that will directly benefit communities, making London an even better place to live and work.”

The funding has been allocated through the local implementation plan, which sets out how to execute the mayor’s transport strategy in the borough.

The strategy details how to improve and maintain the transport network throughout London.

The Mayor of London added: “Last year in Bexley the local implementation plan financed 30 on-street cycle parking spaces, cycle training for 806 children and 48 adults, removal of 280 metres of guardrail, 170 road safety education and training events, enabled 117 schools to participate in walking events and 22 in cycling events and for 389 new street trees.”
