A MAN and woman arrested on suspicion of assaulting a baby boy in Gravesend remain on bail.

A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were arrested on December 1.

The baby was admitted to Darent Valley Hospital on December the same day before being transferred to King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill, where his condition shows signs of improvement.

Police are investigating the incident.

Chief Superintendent Neil Jerome said: "First of all I would like to thank everyone in the community for the compassionate way you have pulled together and expressed support for the baby boy who was admitted to hospital last week with serious, unexplained injuries.

"I know you, like my officers and I, all hope that his condition continues to improve and he has a speedy recovery. He remains stable at present and is receiving excellent care and medical treatment.

"Due to the baby's tender age and the medical care he is currently undergoing, it has not yet been possible to carry out the relevant scans and assessments for the police investigation.

"The baby's well-being is our top priority, and once it is safe to do so my officers will continue with this aspect of the investigation to find out how the injuries were caused and whether criminal offences have been committed.

"Two people who were arrested in connection with this incident remain on bail whilst the investigation continues.

"I will keep you updated as soon as there is fresh information and once again would like to thank you for your co-operation."
