NEARLY 2,000 unemployed Greenwich residents have been given jobs supporting the Olympics, the council says - with more up for grabs.

Recruitment has been made by the Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB) organisation and has found roles in security, catering and hospitality, support services such as cleaning, transport and logistics, and customer service.

Events were held at the group's Woolwich offices and also at Charlton's The Valley football ground, inviting people to apply for roles. The council says 80 per cent of entrants were successful.

Cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Denise Hyland said: "Getting 2,000 unemployed people into work is a great achievement, but this isn’t the end of the story.

"There are still a lot of people who applied online and GLLaB will be getting in touch with them.

"There are still some opportunities for local people."
