Political war on streets of Bromley over leaflet delivery
10:19am Tuesday 17th April 2012 in News By Robert Fisk
Deputy leader of Bromley Council Councillor Colin Smith (left) is battling with Lewisham West and Penge MP Jim Dowd (right)
A POLITICAL war has broken out on the streets of Bromley over the delivery of leaflets.
It comes after a Boris Johnson election pamphlet was delivered at the same time as Bromley Council’s Environment Matters leaflet.
This was due to an error by the distribution company London Letterbox Marketing which has written to the affected households and disciplined its staff.
But despite it being an error out of the control of Bromley Council and the Conservative Party, the Labour MP for Lewisham West and Penge Jim Dowd referred it to the council’s chief internal auditor.
He says he is also considering referring the matter to the Audit Commission.
At the same time councillors are threatening to refer him to the parliamentary standards commissioner for “deliberately spreading misinformation which he either knows, or should know is totally untrue”.
The portfolio holder for the environment Councillor Colin Smith, whose department produces the Environment Matters newsletter, says the MP knew it was a simple error before he put out his press release.
And now the deputy leader of Bromley Council is calling on Mr Dowd to apologise.
Cllr Smith said: “MPs have a moral and professional duty to uphold high standards at all times and not engage in pathetic political muck raking for their own parochial gain in the run up to elections.
“Quite why Mr Dowd chose to act in such a low manner after his councillors had been advised two days previously as to the facts of the matter is something he may wish to explain or justify.
“I’m not holding my breath, but when you’re caught red handed spreading falsehoods as he has been, a public apology is normally the most civilised and easiest way to resolve the matter.”
Mr Dowd said: “The rotten borough that is Bromley Council is not used to being called to account.
“They’ve been found out and they don’t like it.
“I will be pursuing this matter in parliament and with the auditors.”

Whilst I totally understand why there are rules about council leaflets and election leaflets being separate - everyone involved has realised it was just a good old fashioned balls up, no conspiracy etc. Everyone has said sorry, it shouldn't happen again.
Move on.

What a load of nonsense over nothing! The council pay a firm to deliver leaflets for them, Meridian pay the firm to deliver their glossy magazine, the estate agents pay the firm to deliver their adverts, the pizza firm pay the same firm to deliver their menus and the Boris campaign pay the firm to deliver (yet another!) Boris leaflet. All the leaflets get delivered at the same time and they all go into the recycling at the same time but some loony lefty chooses to make a fuss over nothing! Jim Dowd should find better things to do with his time!

Stop trying to gain political gain from a minor screw up that everyone has apologised for.

The fact that Jim Dowd is trying to make political capital out of this shows he's nothing more than a chancer.
For Dowd to claim that Bromley Council aren't used to being called to account is laughable. Hello pot, kettle etc! This is the man who voted strongly for the illegal war in Iraq and voted against there being any investigation into it! He is clearly a man who hates eing called to account himself.
Sling your hook Dowd, back to the Lewisham slums.

Excalibur wrote:OK Jim is perhaps putting on the style a bit, but remember that he is the first non Tory MP to represent any part of the current Bromley borough since Charles Wyckham Martin lost in 1859. He will not be representing Penge after 2015 since the Boundary Commission have recommended reversing their changes of ten years ago & returning Penge to Beckenham. If they had left the boundaries alone then Orpington would have been spared the final four years of John "Thunderbolt" Horam.
Although I have crossed swords with Councillor Smith on many occasions, I'm with him on this one. It was simply a mess up by the distribution company, who have since hels their hands up and apologised. Please vote though people, lets deny the racist BNP their 5% they are so desperate for. They are just praying for a low turn out.
This country needs alternative elected members' of other parties to keep the main 3 on their toes because at the moment there is not much between LabConLibs they may as well all merge under the same banner as "Organised corruption"

I have to admit I watched Carlos or should I say "Manuel" last night. ROFL. He has NO chance NO CHANCE !!
You vote for who ya like though that's a Democracy. I think almost everyone will see it as a joke that the anti immigration party want to elect an immigrant with more than a little bit of an accent. Lets not go there about his Argentinian sympathies, or his posts in sex contact magazines.
Hypocrisy !!!
