LEWISHAM Council has revealed details of its plans to regenerate Deptford High Street.

The proposals will improve the physical condition of the road so that it is better equipped to accommodate traffic four days a week and a street market three days a week.

Plans also include the creation of a new public space at the southern end of the road where it meets New Cross Road.

Other projects involve a review of the processes for collection, recycling and disposal of business waste, and looking at the issue of parking across Deptford town centre.

A further proposal looks at the design and manufacture of a set of portable hoardings to host outdoor art exhibitions.

The council’s deputy mayor and cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Alan Hall said: “This part of Lewisham really is undergoing a major transformation, with fantastic new learning and leisure facilities and greatly improved public spaces.

“I’m confident these exciting new plans will give the market, and the local economy generally, a real boost and I look forward to seeing them in action.”

It also been announced that the council plans to secure the future of Deptford Market by using £1.5m from the Mayor of London’s outer fund.

A proportion of the funding will be used to identify solutions for the market’s future storage needs.

Council officers will be at the Deptford Lounge on Giffin Street from 11am to 4pm and 6.30pm to 7.30pm on March 28 to discuss these ideas further and answer questions from the public.
