Police face public following Forest Hill shooting

The scene yesterday The scene yesterday

POLICE faced the public last night in a snap meeting following the shooting of a suspected car thief in Forest Hill.

It’s last minute nature meant a low turnout, but people still had the chance to grill borough commander Detective Chief Superintendent Jeremy Burton.

Also present at St George’s Church in Vancouver Road was Commissioner Mike Franklin from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), who is leading an investigation into the shooting.

Mr Burton described how his officers were ‘pursued’ and threatened by an armed man on February 19 and had to call for back up in Stanstead Road.

Tasers were used which seemingly failed to subdue the man, who was then shot.

Though specifics, including the number of shots, could not be answered due to the IPCC investigation, there were a range of questions.

For many, the police shooting of Mark Duggan last year which sparked disorder across the capital loomed large.

Delores William, 41, of Catford Hill, asked: “Do you think we’re safe? A lot of us are concerned that things might start kicking off.”

Mr Burton replied: “There’s nothing at this stage we’ve seen that would indicate that. That’s something we’re really monitoring closely.”

Councillor Crada Onuegbu, cabinet member for community safety, mentioned whispers of “external agitators” planning trouble and said: “It falls to the community to say to them ‘not in our name’.”

Other points included “inflammatory” coverage on the BBC, reassurance for the area’s elderly, and the mental state of the victim at the time.

"I want to feel reassured."

A Hurstbourne Road resident voiced frustration that people had not been properly informed of the meeting – called just hours before it was due to begin.

She said: “This is a PR exercise which has been brought at the last minute.

“I want to feel reassured that my young black men aren’t walking along the street being shot by police.”

Det Ch Supt Burton said lessons would be learned and promised a further meeting.

Mr Franklin promised regular updates but said his investigation could take up to eight months.

He said: “If the truth doesn’t look good then so be it.”

The man, named George, is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The IPCC is looking to speak to anyone who saw the shooting. Call 0800 096 9077 or email foresthill@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk

Mrs Perkins seems to have very twisted priorities given the circumstances. It's not the police that anyone needs to worry about - moreover it's the knuckle-dragging, knife-wielding low-lifes like George.

And if the police do need to learn a lesson from this, it's to not feel the need to constantly apologise for keeping us law-abiding citizens safe.

The police obviously needs to learn a lesson from this, 3 bullets weren't enough. The next situation like this empty the whole clip mate.

First of all he was stealing a car, nobody deserves to be shot 5 times for stealing.

If the police can shoot a thief 5 times, then what will they do to a murderer or a rapist???

NOW lets look at Raoul Moat killed his ex girlfriend, her partner and EVEN a police officer and yet the police " Negotiated with Moat", but yet George was shot.

Nobody deserves to be shot for stealing!!

Did the "brave police" wait to see if one shot would stop him, was 5 continous shots nessesary ?????? or is it the ugly head of racism rearing it's head??? .

Julie12, did you READ the article? The police officers (unarmed) were being CHASED by a male with a bladed weapon, (presume knife but could be machete for all I know). Armed colleagues arrive, challenge, he attacks THEM (suicidal? Suicide by cop??) they taser him, that fails to subdue so they shot him. Where is the racism? Are you saying the cop would have thought, "oh, tis only a black man witha knife; no-one cares what we do." Anyway HOW do you know any of the officers weren't themselves black? Challenge your own prejudices for a change and STOP making assumptions until the facts are known.

Grumpygrampi, 1st of all there's 2 sides to a story.

We have only heard of the police's side, how come no witnesses have come forward. Only the police, the person who called the police and George can say what happened on that day, so far we only know of what the police say.

So the tazered him twice and it had no effect, so is it right to shoot him 5 times then? i'm not saying that this guy is innocent, all i'm saying is that 5 shots is too much..... has he a criminal record? No Is he known to the police? No

Even if he did come towards the police, couldn't 8 trained police men restrain 1 man.

I'm sure if it was your relative your reaction would be different..... if not for God this guy would have died.

There's a thin line between sanity and insanity lets hope you always stay on the sane side.

..... and actually none of the police were black.
