WORK on a new leisure centre in Forest Hill is set to begin next year.
Lewisham Council has awarded the construction contract for the complex in Dartmouth Road, Forest Hill, to Willmott Dixon.
Building work is expected to start in January with the new centre opening to the public late 2012.
Facilities in the new building will include a 25m swimming pool, a 16.7m learner pool, gym, two studios, community room and a cafe.
The existing Victorian frontage of Forest Hill Pools will be retained.
Cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Alan Smith, said: “Willmott Dixon made an excellent and detailed bid and I have complete confidence the company will meet the challenges demanded by this complex structural engineering project.”
