A MAJOR development on the site of an old hospital has been given planning approval.

The Heart of East Greenwich development will see 645 homes, including flats and townhouses, built on the former Greenwich District Hospital site in Woolwich Road, Greenwich.

On August 28 a Greenwich Council planning board gave the development the go ahead.

The scheme will also create a new public square and leisure facilities with two swimming pools and fitness studios.

And a health centre will be built on the site including two doctors' surgeries, plus a library, a crèche, a range of shops and cafes.

The project is being run by urban development and investment company First Base and the national regeneration agency English Partnerships.

Greenwich Primary Care Trust will be responsible for the public, leisure and healthcare services on the site.
