A PUBLIC consultation is set to be held about a scheme to regenerate the site of a former district hospital.

An exhibition is currently being held to give residents the chance to view the latest plans for The Heart of East Greenwich project.

The mixed-use development will be built on the site of the old Greenwich District Hospital, Vanbrugh Hill, Greenwich, which closed in March 2001.

Included in the scheme will be 650 homes, half of which will be affordable housing.

There will also be a state-of-the-art leisure centre with two swimming pools and fitness studios and a health centre with two doctor's surgeries.

A library, creche, shops and cafes will also be included in the project.

The proposals by developer First Base, in partnership with the Government's national regeneration agency English Partnerships, aim to deliver London's first major zero carbon scheme.

This will be achieved through on-site heat and power generation.

Philip Dibsdale, the English Partnerships area director for Greenwich, said: "We welcome this exhibition as the latest in a series of opportunities for the community to engage with the regeneration of the former hospital site.

"We are confident this project will set standards as a mixed-use development which is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, while also ensuring the existing character of the area is retained and enhanced."

Greenwich Council's cabinet member for Greener Greenwich, Councillor Rajwant Sidhu, said: "We have a responsibility to future generations to create the kind of Greenwich they deserve."

The final public exhibition will be held tomorrow between 5pm and 8pm at The Forum, Trafalgar Road, Greenwich.

After consultations with the community are finished, plans are due to be submitted to the council in December.
