A DEVELOPER has been appointed to help regenerate a former hospital site.

First Base won the contract to work with regeneration agency English Partnerships to transform the former Greenwich District Hospital site.

By 2010 the project, known as the Heart of East Greenwich, on the corner of Woolwich Road and Vanburgh Hill, will have affordable housing, a swimming pool, a fitness centre, a library and a doctor's surgery.

The cost of the project is undisclosed but will be co-funded by both the public and private sectors. Greenwich Council has so far provided £190,000.

First Base will now work with Greenwich Council and English Partnerships to finalise design plans and development timescales before a final public consultation on the plans takes place in June 2007.

It is hoped work will begin on the site early next year.
