OPPONENTS of Biggin Hill Airport expansion say yesterday's plane crash confirms their flight path safety fears.

The airport, which caters for private and small planes, is facing renewed attacks about possibe expansion.

Flightpath, which was formed in 1999, say that Biggin Hill Airport Limited want to substantially increase the number of passengers passing through each year.

Following the air crash at Farnborough, acting chairman, Ray Watson, said: "I think it's really sad it's taken this terrible tragedy to focus on safety at the airport.

"Residents have consistently said they do not want any international airport in the crowded suburbs of a London borough.

"In fact, tens of thousands of people live and work under the flight path, and this crash occured within quarter of a mile of a major hospital and close to a school."

Orpington MP John Horam said: "This confirms the fears of those of us who have consistently opposed the expansion of Biggin Hill Airport.

"One of the problems with the airport is that the direct approach means that planes have to fly low over our local hospital, schools as well as residential areas.

"I am sure that this tragic incident - which could have been much worse - must be taken into account in any discussion of the future of the airport."

In August last year 10 people were arrested during a protest against expansion.

what a silly comment made by Ray Watson. The plane crash has nothing to do with airport safety.
Mr Watson is just using this as an excuse to carry on his plight against the airport

I live directly under the flight path for Biggin Hill.

Should we all stop driving cars because they kill thousands of people a year... or trains or any other sort of high powered transport.

When will people stop being jealous of those who can afford to fly. If you did not want to live near an airport, why did you buy a house near one?

Please let the airport survive it causes the minimum of problems to the area and provides employmnet opportunities for a lot of people who live locally.

Before anyone asks, I neither own a plane nor work at the airport.

I agree wih Glenn & Scott Why buy a house near an airport if you don't like the flights coming overhead? Its rediculous and this accident was just that, a tragic ACCIDENT. Dont use it as an excuse to carry on your campaign of hate against Biggin Hill Airport, if you dont like it Mr. Watson i suggest you move!

Mr Watson you must have known that your property was on the flight path before it was purchased. So stop Bleating

I can't believe these flightpath people - they haven't even got the bodies out yet and already they are banging on about Biggin Bloody Hill Airport already.

Have some decency!

What a lot of tosh.

The only reason the MP's and Councillors don't want the airport to expand is because they live under the flight paths.

This tragic accident has NOTHING to do with the airport's planned expansion and it is shameful that these people are using it to give their argument weighting.

If you don't like planes then move as far away from an airport as you possibly can.

Completely agree with all of the above ...

These 'Flat Earthers' won't be happy until the airport is put out of business and turned into a giant housing estate.

Perhaps they'll all be happy then. Shame on them all.

As for John Horam and others wittering on about expansion, what are they all on ? The airport can't expand. It's got a fixed number of flights allocated to it per year that it can't exceed under the terms of it's lease.

Stop this sideshow now and show some respect for the dead.

H'mm and wot's this I'm hearing ..

Ray Watson 'Acting Chairman' of Flightpath is also 'Chair'(or at least was until recently) of Bromley Friends of the Earth.

Sounds like a militant 'green' conspiracy is afoot locally to me!

I totally agree, I live directly opposite the airfield and love it here, I love to look at the planes and helicopters and yes if I didnt like the planes then I would not have moved here! Like I say I live as close a you can get to the airfield and do not feel it is a problem at all, I hardly even hear any planes! At the end of the day this traggic accident could have happended anywhere! what a brave pilot, his family should be extremly proud of him and my thoughts go to all the families x

v sad 5 people died but i dont want the airport to expand i dont mind the odd executive jet but no way do i want scheduled flights in my backyard with the increased traffic and noise it brings i moved to biggin hill 7 years ago just after the expansion plans were thrown out i fully support flightpath

Its very sad that 5 people died. All praise to the pilot, it could have been a lot more.
But I am appalled at some of the comments I've read on here from the "Anti Biggin Hill Brigade"
It's not the airports fault that the plane crashed. A tragic accident is exactly what it was.
You anti airport people should be more concerned about whats coming in and out of Heathrow, why are you not jumping up and down over that?? Probably because you think it doesn't affect you? Well in case it escaped your notice, we are on the Heathrow flypath, Biggin/Farnborough area is their 'stacking' ground. When the airport is busy the planes have to circle somewhere, your it. You think those planes are too high to come down? not if they crash into one another, they are coming down. Do some research, find out how many near misses there have been over the years, thats not down to pilot error either, its the control tower.
Biggin do a great job they have their rules and regulations regarding safety and height of planes.
Biggin have their air show coming up soon, I wish them a very successful show despite all the moaners. One of the comments I saw said when she moved there Biggin was for sending our war heroes off and welcoming them back, well in a round about way they still welcome them back, who do you think fly the fighter jets at the displays?
As for the most stupid comment I heard about the Red Arrows flying "between the houses" even the Reds good as they are, would not attempt that one. Public safety is uppermost in all pilots minds, as was proved by the Pilot of that aircraft yesterday.
So go do something useful with your lives, if you dont like airports or planes don't live near one, oh, and check out the flightpaths too.
My condolences to the families of all those on board that plane.

typical of the hate biggin hill brigade.
one crash in how many years involving a public property and the merchant bankers are out in force, one has to ask how long these numpties have been living near the airfield ? as previously said should we stop driving cars because accidents happen ? should we ban all forms of extreme sport because people die ? the simple fact of the matter is this boring old fart has no life at all and nothing better to do than hassle and harrass bromley council and the owners of biggin hill airport. still his had his day earnt his money, his ok jack pull the ladder up the selfish old git, lets shut the airport and make hundreds redundant just to make old victor mildrew here happy shall we ! what a pratt.

At last some balanced views. This was a tragic accident which has nothing to do with any plans the airport may have for modernising the airport. Those against anything the airport undertake use the word expansion and images of jumbo jets to scare the less well informed, they even used these to prevent a hotel being built at the airport a facility that would have been used by the whole community. The politicians listen to those that shout loudest, at last other voices are being heard.

Because an aircraft was involved it created a media frenzy looking for aviation experts from those living within the community affected by the accident. Were are the mass media and action groups when almost weekly we have young drivers and there passengers killing themselves and other road users in the London Borough of Bromley?

Biggin Hill is a wonderful facility that Bromley should be proud of. The accident was an unfortunate incident as was the recent 777 crash at Heathrow. When will Bromley Council cut Biggin Hill some slack, the area needs another decent hotel, the airport needs to be allowed to thrive and create jobs.
I'm fed up with Flightpath/Green Party frightening all and sundry with pictures of Jumbo jets etc this will not happen. By accommadating business jets it brings new business into the area.
The terrible accident was not a Biggin problem. What has amazed me is the amount of support the airport has received
