Seventy-five firefighters from across London were drafted in to get a massive blaze which ripped through a car scrap yard on the Darent industrial estate under control.
A 200m exclusion zone was set up when it was discovered propane and acetylene gas cylinders were on the premises.
Eyewitnesses spoke of flames reaching 30ft into the air while a plume of black smoke was visible across south east London.
