October 2006
A YEAR-LONG search to find Bromley’s Best came to an end as a nurse was awarded first prize for her achievements.
Bromley’s Best was launched in 2005, in association with The Glades shopping centre, Broomleigh Housing Association and Bromley Council to recognise everything which is good about the borough.
News Shopper focused on categories ranging from best barperson to best postman, best mechanic to best neighbour. A judging panel chose a monthly winner.
Readers were then given the chance to vote for an overall winner from 12 categories.
All 12 finalists were invited to an awards ceremony at Bromley Civic Centre and the top three winners were announced.
The winner was Bromley’s Best Nurse, Chris Wright, of Minard Road, Catford, who received a glass trophy and £500 of Glades vouchers.
The district nurse, based at the Beckenham Clinic, The Crescent, was nominated by many people including patient Doris Middleton, formerly of Kingsworth Close, Beckenham.
Mrs Wright said: “I love my job and am delighted to have been chosen as the overall winner.

“I would like to thank the Middleton family for nominating me as Doris has since passed away.
“I would also like to thank the people I work with, including the patients and GPs as they make my job a pleasure to do.”
Second prize went to Bromley’s Best Shop Assistant, 39-year-old Sue Jarrett, from Plaxtol Village Bakery, Southborough Lane, Bickley.
Miss Jarrett, who received £250 worth of Glades vouchers and a trophy, says she really enjoyed the evening.

She said: “I am so happy to be recognised for the job I do and I can’t wait to go shopping with my prize money.”
Bromley’s Best Postman, Danny Boyle, won £100 of Glades vouchers and a trophy after scooping third place.
Mr Boyle has been a postman since 1987 and started delivering to Petts Wood in 1991.
The 35-year-old, of Sidcup Road, Mottingham, said: “It’s an honour to be appreciated and be recognised.
“I look out for some residents and it’s nice because I know everyone and I enjoy my job.”
Group Editor Andrew Parkes says Bromley’s Best is an important way of highlighting residents’ achievements: “It is important to recognise people who do things to stand out in their everyday lives.
“It was a great evening and everyone seemed to really enjoy it.”
