1963: Henry Cooper, south London’s own British heavyweight champion, shocks US boxer Cassius Clay at Wembley on June 18 by sending him sprawling in round four. Saved by the bell, Clay recovers and forces Cooper to retire with a cut eye in the next round.
1953: A book by a former journalist who worked in naval intelligence is published to critical acclaim. The author is Ian Fleming and the book is Casino Royale. One critic, Kingsley Amis, says: “a remarkable new writer has appeared on the scene”.
1948: Miss Richmal Crompton, 58, the former classics mistress of Bromley High School, has published the latest book featuring William Brown, her cheeky 11-year-old creation. It is called Just William’s Luck. It follows her two earlier books, William and the Brains Trust and William Carries On.
