HORTON KIRBY: Retired engineer died after contact with asbestos

A RETIRED engineer died after repeatedly coming into contact with asbestos, a coroner has ruled.

An inquest into the death of Arthur Saunders, who died at Darent Valley Hospital aged 87 on May 24, found he had died from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

During the hearing at Gravesend Coroner’s Court, a statement from Mr Saunders’ son Nigel said he had come into contact with asbestos daily while working as a project engineer.

Giving a verdict of death due to industrial disease, Coroner Roger Hatch said: “It is clear from the evidence of his son that Mr Saunders was involved in work that would have put him in contact with asbestos.”

Mr Saunders lived in Churchill Road in Horton Kirby with his wife Mary.
