SWANLEY: Demolition of 'iconic landmark' leaves residents distraught

THE demolition of an “iconic landmark” has worried residents who fear their heritage is being destroyed.

The Bull pub in London Road, Swanley, has been demolished after Sevenoaks District Council granted planning permission to Whitbread PLC on July 30 to build a Premier Inn hotel and Beefeater restaurant on the derelict site.

The building, which was most recently Deja Vu nightclub, had become dogged with controversy after a series of crime-related incidents including arson and assault.

David Harrison, 70, of Park Way, Wilmington, told News Shopper he remembers The Bull from when he was a child.

The grandfather-of-two said: “I can remember passing The Bull on my way to Ramsgate for my annual summer holidays 60 years ago.

“I’m so disappointed that an iconic landmark has been wiped away.

“A bit of our heritage has gone.”

Bus driver Jim Halford, of London Road, Swanley, says he is worried the demolition will be detrimental to Swanley’s history.

The 61-year-old said: “We’re losing our heritage.

“I am deeply concerned for our history being demolished bit by bit in the name of progress.

“We have to keep our history for the future generation so they know where they come from.”

Councillor Robert Woodbridge of Swanley Town Council was consulted on the development but says he is sad it has been scrapped.

He said: “It’s a shame to see it go but hopefully the hotel will bring some employment into the community.”

The development is set to be finished early next year.

Good riddance if you ask me! While it may have been a nicer spot some time ago but the last 10 years of it's life were spent being a place for a lot of scum to hang out.

I do find it hard to belive that Premier Inn believe they'll actually make any money from having a hotel there though! It's hardly convenient for M25 or A20 folk and, lets face it, there's not much in Swanely apart from gypo camps and council houses!

Will watch this one with interest!

Half the population of Swanley, Darford, The Crays etc are the result of a boozy night at The Bull/Deja Vu and a quick knee trembler in the dark somewhere near. Nothing much will change then with a new cheap 'hotel'.

This comment is ridiculous. What we're losing here is our history, and I for one will regret the passing of this landmark building in favour of another anonymous pub and hotel.

Gypo, which half of the population you're talking about are you in then?

Iconic landmark? whats iconic about a pub? get over it, its a bloody pub for gods sake. And there going to build anotherone in its place, you watch once its built all the locals will be in there holding up the bar and will have forgotten about the old building.

springy, gone away , history, history you wouldn't know it if it smacked ya in the chops. It was a typical run down old boozer. Deja Vu had more old dogs than Crayford Greyhound Stadium on a good night.
I ain't in the half conceived in the car park of The Bull / Deja Vu, is that why you have an affinity with that place.

The comment "The building, which was most recently Deja Vu nightclub, had become dogged with controversy after a series of crime-related incidents including arson and assault." says it all

Could the shell not have been used for the new development? I used to work in Swanley and it was indeed a landmark for me. I shall be sad to see it gone next time I drive past. The fact it used to be a bit of dump isn't the building's fault...

The fact deja vu was considered an iconic landmark, shows exactly what at least half the residents are all about in Swanley, I find it's cheapening that a club with a bad reputation was Swanleys "landmark", and makes me embarrassed that I ever lived in Swanley. I'd rather chew my own foot off than admit to most people I ever lived in such a town.

I'm glad it's being replaced by a hotel which brings in new jobs and hopefully more life, Swanley needs to be dragged into modern life, not just a dingy town where the most you have to look forward to is ASDA.
